A daily wage laborer aged 16 years died in an accident while working in the Jai Balaji’s sponge iron unit at Sagarbhanga of Durgapur. The incident which took place yesterday uncovered the practice of employing underage youths in private industrial units, and making them work for long hours in unsafe conditions without standard safety gears.
Durgapur, the industrial hub of West Bengal saw mixed response on the first day of the two-day industrial strike which began today. Though attendance and production in most of the major industries of Durgapur was normal, people on the road, markets and malls were very poor. Road remained empty, schools were mostly closed, banks remained shut and even government offices lacked visitors.
