The seven day long All India Sub-Junior Ranking Badminton Tournament 2013 held at the Sidhu Kanhu Indoor Stadium of Durgapur ended yesterday. The tournament which has been inaugurated by the ace Indian shuttler, Pullela Gopichand, was attended by more than 1000 players from different parts of the country. Siril Varma A.S.S from Andhra Pradesh won the Boys Under 15 title, while Kanika Kanwal of Delhi won the Girls Under 15 title. Angad Borchetia of Assam won the “Under 13” Boys Singles title, while Akshita A. of Andhra Pradesh was the winner of the “Under 13” Girls singles title.
39 year old Deb Shankar Shaw was arrested at around 8.30 on Friday (July 26) night from Uttarpara in Hooghly district by GRP on charges of molesting a 25-year-old Asansol women working in an IT firm in Kolkata, in the near-empty ladies’ compartment of the Delhi-Howrah Janata Express last Sunday (July 21).
On Friday, Durgapur police police arrested two Civic Police Volunteers Force (CPVF) personnel in Durgapur – Amit Ghughu and Bijoy Pal, on charges of assaulting three youths and demanding bribe from them. Amit is the son of Trinamool councillor of ward no. 10 of local civic body. Both were however granted bail because of the charges slapped on them were all bailable. However this has raised serious question mark about the excesses and high handedness of this CPVF personnel in Durgapur-Asansol region.
Death of a class X student of St. Mary Goretti School of Asansol almost an hour after she complained of giddiness during assembly at school sparked off protest by students that lead into road blockade. Father of the victim lodged a written complaint in Asansol South police station against the school authority of medical negligence.
