Established in 1980, Asansol Durgapur Development Authority (ADDA)is a state-backed statutory body responsible for infrastructure development in Asansol, Raniganj, Durgapur, Jamuria & Kulti. ADDA took a major role in transforming the industrial belt into one of the fastest developing region of the country. Durgapur and Asansol being named as the fastest developing cities of eastern India is major achievement of ADDA.
In the last thirty years, the administrative control of ADDA was with the MLAs, MP from the ruling parties left front. Mr Bansogopal Chowdhury, the Asansol MP had been a long-term chairman of the board. But the scenario changed after the recent poll debacle of the left in the state assembly poll. After Trinamool Congress formed government and moreover after winning assembly seats of Durgapur, Asansol, Raniganj and Kulti, Mr Chowdhury resigned from the post on 22 May accepting moral defeat. He said: “As the new government has come to power, it is up to them to decide a new board and a new chairman.”
Speculations were rife in ADDA offices in the twin towns of Asansol and Durgapur as to who will be the new chairman of ADDA. At least half a dozen names have cropped up. Names of Tapas Bandopadhaya and Apurba Mukherjee emerged as front runners.Yessterday, Mamta Banerjee government announced the name of Mr. Tapas Bandopadhaya as the new chairman of Asansol Durgapur Development Authority (ADDA).
Mr. Bandopadhaya is the sitting MLA of Asansol South assembly constituency and the Mayor of Asansol Municipal Corporation as well. It’s a matter to be seen as how Mr. Bandopadhaya being a very busy man already (engaged in carrying out dual responsibilities) takes out time to engage himself in the developmental activities of ADDA. In the last thirty years ADDA has immensely contributed in the developmental activities of Asansol, Raniganj and Durgapur. The task of carrying out this developmental work needs whole hearted effort. Time will only say as how well Mr. Badopadhaya stands of and deliver to the huge responsibility he has been entrusted upon.
