Durgapur police have arrested two women on Thursday, who they said had been looking after the operations of the Axes Group after its three directors fled following a court-ordered probe into a cheating complaint. Police has been probing multiple cases of cheating against the Axes group following a court order to investigate upon a complaint of cheating against Axes lodged by Arijit Das of Andal in Durgapur court.
Moumita Chattaraj and Anita Mukhopadhyay were arrested from their home in Durgapur on Thursday night and were produced in Durgapur court yesterday. The ACJM of Durgapur court rejected the bail petition of the two and sent them to police custody for three days.
Durgapur police conducted a raid on Thursday night after investigators checking data of computers seized from Axes offices in Darjeeling and Kalimpong found e-mails allegedly sent by Moumita Chattarjee and her aide Anita Mukhopadhyay to colleagues from the head office of Axes at City Centre of Durgapur. The e-mails instructed subordinates in 19 branches on how to carry on with their job.
“We have learnt that Chattaraj had been looking after the company’s business on behalf of (director) Katyayan Bhattacharyya after he and two of his co-directors fled. The e-mails sent by Chattaraj also told the employees not to worry about their salaries,” said Sunil Yadav, the additional deputy commissioner of police (east).
The Durgapur-based Axes Group mobilised deposits by seeking investments against gold and land, the police said. The firm’s office at City Centre was sealed after a raid on April 30, before which all the three directors of the company fled.
Police sources said that they have already written to the Union information and broadcasting ministry seeking to know if it had given permission to Axes to run a news channel called “Info.” The media channel has openly supported TMC campaign during the civic body poll in Durgapur. Moreover, Durgapur Mayor Mr. Apurba Mukherjee has often been seen to share stage with the directors of the company.
Running of Axes Group’s media channel, “Info” from a redesigned and renovated Durgapur Steel Plant’s quarter in Akbar Road of Durgapur has already courted controversy. Questions are being raised over how SAIL logo is being used by Axes in their signboard, why SAIL authority have allotted quarter and land to company like Axes.
Axes Multi Developers Ltd., a real estate company of Durgapur which in last two to three years diversified into media, resort, hotel business and mobilizing funds is reported to have collected around Rs 50 crore in the past six years on the false promise allotting plots, investigators have learnt.
