A fake examinee was arrested by the Durgapur police on Wednesday (September 25, 2013) but managed to flee under mysterious circumstances.
One Choton Mondal was allegedly appearing in the physical endurance exam for the post of Constable in the Exercise Department in place of the original examinee Harinder Thakur of Burnpur. While the physical test examination test was going at the Indian Reserve Batalion Camp in Bidhannagar of Durgapur, officers of the Exercise Department suspected about the impersonation. The photograph on the admit card and other related information seemed a mismatch to them and they informed the police.
Police from the Bidhannagar Phanri under New Township police station arrived and arrested the false examinee. The police on preliminary interrogation came to know that the person arrested is Choton Mondal, a resident of Kandi in Murshidabad and he was appearing in lieu of Harinder Thakur of Burnpur in Asansol.
After the arrest, police was taking Choton to the Sub-divisional hospital in Bidhannagar for routine medical examination which is a mandatory affair after any arrest and before being produced in court. Choton was in the back seat of the police vehicle. Just before entering the hospital premises, the vehicle slowed down and Choton jumped from the vehicle and managed to flee taking advantage of the busy locality.
Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate (East) Sunil Yadav said that an intense search operation has been started immediately after the incident and he sounded hopeful of arresting the culprit by the earliest.
An official of the police department revealed that a police departmental inquiry has also been initiated to find out whether there were any lapses on the part of the police team and whether the arrested person was properly handcuffed.
