Burnpur’s IISCO Steel Plant accident death toll rise to five

Durgapur News Desk, 10 May 2017: The death toll of the devastating accident at IISCO Steel Plant (ISP) Burnpur rises to five with one more contract worker, Asish Sahoo (34), succumbing to his burn injuries at the Mission Hospital in Durgapur.

Sahoo, who was on ventilation with over 90 percent burn injuries, passed away at about 7 pm yesterday.

Dr. satyajit Bose, chairman of The Mission Hospital in Durgapur’s Bidhannagar locality informed media about the death of Asish Sahoo and further added by saying that the condition of the fourth patient admitted at his hospital, Salim Khan, with over 30 per cent burn injuries is thermodynamically stable.

One might remember that in a major devastating accident at the Indian Iron and Steel Company (IISCO) Steel Plant in Burnpur on the wee hours of 6 May 2017, two contractual workers, Sanwar Sheikh, 29, and Asish Sikka, 30, were killed on the spot when the molten metal fell on them from a height of about 60 feet.

Four critically injured contractual workers were immediately shifted to The Mission Hospital in Durgapur, having a Burn Unit. Of the four critically injured, Shankar Nag, 30, succumbed to his injuries on Saturday night. He had been brought to the hospital with almost 90 percent burns.

On Sunday (7 May 2017) Sanjib Chatterjee, 25, a resident of the Surya Nagar in Asansol succumbed to his burn injuries in the Durgapur-based Mission Hospital.

SAIL has already constituted a high power committee to probe the accident at the Steel Melting Shop-Continuous Casting Plant zone of Burnpur-based IISCO Steel Plant.

Three top officials, general manager Subir Mondal, deputy general manager Gobinda Bandopadhyay and the crane operator Siddharth Suriya have already been charge sheeted in the case.

“The company is offering employment to one descendent of each of the deceased and a cash compensation of five lakhs to each of the victim’s family” said Bhaskar Kumar, IISCO spokesperson.

SAIL Chairman P K Singh visited the accident site of the IISCO Steel Plant today with Director General (Personnel), N Mahapatra. He met the representatives of the five central trade unions and listened to their grievances about the safety aspect in IISCO Steel Plant in particular.

Mr. Singh later visited The Mission Hospital in Durgapur also to meet the ISP Burnpur workers who are admitted there.
