Durgapur Project Limited

CITU – the labour arm of CPI(M) has brought serious charges of violation of Model Code of Conduct (MCC) by the state-owned power utility company Durgapur Project Limited (DPL) situated at Durgapur. Report suggests that DPL has retrenched 150 contract labourers on 1 April.

CITU has sought immediate intervention by the district election department over the matter. The Citu’s Burdwan district committee alleged: “DPL – the principal employer in respect of wage labourers working under the organisation as per Contract Labourer Regulation & Abolition Act’ 1970, has issued instructions to deny employment of 150 contractor workers working in the plant since long.”

Mr B K Chakraborty, district CITU president said: “They have been retrenched out of political motivation and the DPL authorities have deliberately issued such a notice which we have condemned and have sought for immediate intervention by the election department.”

The DPL authority meanwhile has pleaded ignorance about the matter. Mr M K Moitra, MD, DPL said: “I am yet to know
about this.”

The district administration, meanwhile, was yet to ascertain whether it was falling under the purview of MCC violation. The DM, Burdwan, Dr Soumitra Mohan said that he was yet to check the magnitude of charges and whether it was flouting the MCC stipulations.
