Clashes between the supporters of the two rival factions of INTTUC, on the authority of recruiting contractual worker in Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP) continued on Monday as well. Supporters of both “Durgapur Steel Plant Thika Mazdoor Congress” and “Durgapur Steel Plant Thika Mazdoor Union”, the two union of INTTUC clashed with each other at the Main Gate of Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP). State Police and CISF unit of DSP intervened and removed the supporters of both the unions.
Monday’s clash outside the Main Gate of DSP was however a continuation of the conflict which started on Sunday at Amrai village of Durgapur, 2 Km from DSP’s Main Gate. During Sunday’s clash between the supporters of the two factions of INTTUC, six persons and three policemen were injured.
Presently there are two unions of INTTUC in DSP, for the contractual workers of the plant. The older one is the Durgapur Steel Plant Thika Mazdoor Congress, led by district INTTUC secretary Mr. Probhat Chatterjee, which got affiliation on 14th May 2010 from the contemporary state secretary of INTTUC Purnendu Bose. The second one is the Durgapur Steel Plant Thika Mazdoor Union, which was given affiliation on 17th August 2012, by Pradip Bandopadhyay, who was the all India general secretary of INTTUC at that time.
Durgapur Steel Plant Thika Mazdoor Congress had been regulating the absorption and retrenchment of contractual workers at SAIL’s Durgapur Steel Plant since the past three years after Trinamool Congress came into power in Bengal.
However, on 22 May, at a large gathering in front of Main Gate of DSP, the Central Committee leadership of the INTTUC led by its chairman, Mr. Sobhondeb Chatterjee, declared Durgapur Steel Plant Thika Mazdoor Congress as ‘unofficial’, and “Durgapur Steel Plant Thika Mazdoor Union” was given the “official” status of INTTUC’s unit in DSP with Mr. Nirod Biswas as its secretary.
Mr. Probhat Chatterjee, belonging to the INTTUC faction of Dola Sen, Purnendu Bose however didn’t accepted the declaration by INTTUC chairman, Mr. Sobhondeb Chatterjee, in which the affiliation of Thika Mazdoor Congress was not renewed and was declared “unofficial”.
Muscle flexing by the supporters of both the factions started immediately after affiliation of Durgapur Steel Plant Thika Mazdoor Congress was not renewed and Durgapur Steel Plant Thika Mazdoor Union was made the “official” union of INTTUC for the contractual workers of DSP.
Sensing trouble, the DSP authority on Monday informed state police and even directed the CISF unit to control the situation, so that violence does not enters the plant premises and disrupts the environment within the plant. Both state police and CISF successfully dispersed the mob that gathered inside and outside the main gate of DSP.
However, INTTUC sources revealed that in near future chances of more such clashes are very much on the cards as both the factions are determined to establish their supremacy and regulate the recruitment of contractual labor in DSP.
