Though CPM’s student wing SFI is not in fray for the upcoming student union election, yet there were reports of violence and vandalism in Michael Madhusadan Memorial College of Durgapur during filing of nomination paper yesterday. SFI could not file nomination in any of the three colleges of Durgapur.
Supporters of two factions of Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) clashed with each other, while the process of filing nomination paper was going on inside the college campus. Baton-wielding policemen had to bring the situation under control by chasing the TMCP activists. Two TMCP supporters, Rajiv Mondal and Sheikh Saddam Hossain were arrested.
According to reports, there are 44 seats in Michael Madhusadan Memorial College of Durgapur and TMCP collected nomination papers for all the 44 seats on Tuesday (January 21). Apart from the nomination papers collected by TMCP, 21 more nomination papers were also collected.
Yesterday (January 22) was the day of nomination submission for the college election. While the 44 TMCP candidates were filing their nomination papers, the other 21 candidates belonging to rival factions of TMCP were also filing their nomination. On this, violence broke out and the TMCP supporters owing allegiance to rival factions clashed among themselves.
Arrangements of police picketing were already made, as the college officials’ sensed violence beforehand. Police present there took sharp action and dispersed the supporters of the two factions.
Rajat Biswas, TMCP Durgapur President said that report of violence and clash in Michael Madhusadan Memorial College of Durgapur has reached him and he is inquiring into the matter.
