Durgapur News Desk, 16 July 2017: Yesterday, at an event in the Srijoni Auditorium of Durgapur, CPI(M) released its election manifesto for the upcoming Municipal election which is scheduled to be held on 13th August. The elections were due in May 2017. There was virtual tsunami of CPI(M) supporters at Srijoni; many even couldn’t manage to enter the auditorium.
Apart from releasing the party’s manifesto, CPI(M) Polit Bureau member and West Bengal State Secretary Comrade Surjya Kanta Mishra and West Bengal State Secretariate member Comrade Madan Ghosh declared the names of party’s candidate for the 30 wards of the Durgapur Municipal Corporation. There are a total of 43 wards in the Durgapur civic body.
Name of one Forward Block candidate was declared. Sources said that other Left Front partners will also announce their candidate names for the rest of the wards.
Mishra sounded cautious on whether there will be an alliance with Congress. He stated that there might be some adjustment but no formal alliance is on the anvil for the Durgapur civic poll.
One might remember that in the last assembly poll in 2016, there was an adjustment between Left Front and Congress in the state. CPI(M) and Congress fielded one candidate each in the last assembly poll against Trinamul Congress. Both CPI(M) and Congress won in their respective seats in Durgapur, quite comprehensively.
Congress leadership expressed their discontentment over releasing of candidate’s name by CPI(M), without consultation with them. Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, state congress president recently stated that congress will field candidate in all the 43 wards of Durgapur civic poll.
While addressing the packed house, Dr. Mishra, CPI(M) state secretary asked party workers to reach every house in his or her respective locality with the election manifesto, even if he or she is a known Trinamul or BJP or Congress worker.
He also appealed for a unified resistance against any attempt of vote loot.
