The lone ‘Crorepati’ candidate in the Bardhaman district of Bengal contesting from the Bardhaman-Durgapur Lok Sabha seat incidentally hails from Trinamool Congress – the party of Maa, Maati, Manush.
Dr Mumtaz Sanghamita Chowdhury, the Trinamool Congress candidate for Bardhhaman-Durgapur Lok Sabha seat, according to the affidavit she filed in her nomination, show that she owns cash and gold worth Rs 1.06 crore and five acres of farmland worth Rs 30 lakh in Bardhaman and Kalna areas. Besides, she also owns residential buildings and accommodations in Dilkhusa Street, Dargah Road in Kolkata and Sriniketan sector in New Delhi apart from her two inherited residential properties in Parcas Road and Mohammed Yasin Road in Bardhaman municipal town.
Daughter of former state minister Syed Mansur Habibullah (speaker of the West Bengal assembly from 1977 to 1982 and was the state law minister from 1982 to 1987 during Left Front regime in Bengal) and wife of state minister and former justice of Kolkata High Court, Mr Nure Alam Chowdhury, Mumtaz is herself a retired head of the department of the Gynecology department at Kolkata Medical College.
Mr Apurba Mukherjee, president of the TMC’s Bardhaman (industrial) part told gave clarification by saying: “Someone inheriting ancestral property is not an offence and we have never told the people that the rich are enemy of the mass.”
However, the affidavit Dr. Chowdhury shows that apart from the residential properties in Parcas Road and Mohammed Yasin Road in Bardhaman municipal town which she inherited as a part of ancestral property, all other properties has been her sole income.
Dr Mumtaz said: “I have grown up with the masses as my family had a pivotal role in mass movements since the fight for freedom. I am a physician and I have long been a listener of the plight and discomfort of the common people. It is my passion to hear them out.”
The news must have raised some uncomfortable questions among not only the voters of Bardhaman-Durgapur Lok Sabha constituency, but with the party supporters and members, which prompted party leaders like Apurba Mukherjee who is the mayor of Durgapur civic body to give statement in clarification of such huge wealth of Dr. Chowdhury.
