Payel Bandopadhyay, a student of Hem Sheela Model School of Durgapur with 75% vision loss has stunned everyone by scoring above 90% marks in the CBSE class XII board exam. In spite of such vision impairment, her “never give up” attitude and the support from her school and family made her achieve such phenomenal result.
Payel, a resident of Panagarh near Durgapur appeared class XII exam of CBSE in commerce stream and scored 91.8%. In fact she is the highest scorer in Economics in her school. Payel also performed very well in her board exam of class X. There she scored 91.2% appearing CBSE class X exam from Manisha International School of Durgapur.
Payel, though a normal child in every other respect, had such poor vision from her early childhood. The fact that she has vision problem first came to be known when she was in Nursery. She had to run to the black board or stand closest to TV for viewing.
Her father Mr. Gopal Bandopadhyay, a lawyer of Durgapur Court took Payel to Shankar Netralaya of Chennai, where the doctors informed, two nerves of Payel’s eye has dried out and is the cause of such poor vision. The doctors also said that there is no medicine or cure for the problem.
Her vision is so poor that even with magnifying glass also she is not able to see clearly. It is her mother, Mala Devi who has always stood by her younger daughter and never allowed any negative vibes to touch Payel. Mala Devi use to read, which Payel would hear and memorize. This was the usual custom till the board exam of CBSE class X in 2011, when her elder sister Doyel, a lawyer of Calcutta High Court brought her a typical mouse, which when placed on the letters of a book is shown magnified on a LCD monitor.
“Payel is a real inspiration for all of us”, said the Hem Sheela Principal, Soumen Chakraborty. Payel is keen to study with Economics from Presidency University.
