An engineering graduate from IIT Roorkee, Mr. Singh joined SAIL in 1980 at Bokaro Steel Plant and began his career at the Blast furnace department. Since 1989, he has served at Burnpur as a part of the Core Group formed for prospective modernization of IISCO, Burnpur. In 2001 he was transferred to Durgapur as DGM where he stuck to Blast Furnace department.

In 2008, Singh was back at Burnpur as General Manager (Iron). Next year he was transferred to Bokaro but only to come back to Burnpur for his third stint in May 2011 on promotion as ED (Works). After a brief stint as ED (Works) at Bokaro Steel Limited and Durgapur Steel Plant he took over as CEO of DSP on May 1, 2012 and has been at the helm of affairs at DSP for the last three years.

Though the recent incident of three deaths in a fatal accident at the Bloom Caster of DSP has tarnished his image to some extent, but this decision of the SAIL management to assign him with this dual responsibility speaks highly of his caliber and how much the steel ministry has faith on him.
