Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP), the integrated Steel Plant under Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) located at Durgapur has recorded its all-time best production of saleable steel and special and valued added steel for the financial year 2013-14.
Continuing in its path of growth DSP’s output of finished steel went up by 3 per cent, while the wheel and axle unit notched up the most impressive growth figure of 22 per cent growth during the recently concluded financial year.
Even in the last financial year of 2012-13 DSP recorded an all-time high performance. In 2012-13 output of hot metal, crude steel and saleable steel grew 7 per cent, 6 per cent and 5 per cent, respectively.
The production figures in this financial year exceeded annual targets for all areas of production.
In a statement, DSP said that, even with only two blast furnaces in operation throughout March, the plant was able to achieve its annual targets. Major repairs of the blast furnace No. 3 are under way and are expected to join the production line in this month only.
After achieving a production figure of 2.02 million tons crude steel during 2013-14, DSP is all set to strive for a much better performance in 2014-15 feels analysts and industry sources, as the ongoing modernization and expansion of this SAIL unit is expected to be completed by September this year.
One might recall that in a recent press interview, SAIL Chairman C S Verma expressed hope that the worst for the steel sector is over and green shoots are visible in areas like prices and inventories.
Going by the Chairman’s hope more record setting production is expected to come up in near future.
