Durgapur News Desk, 03 January 2017: The Under 19 cricket team of Durgapur won the Inter Subdivision Under 19 Cricket championship of Bardhaman district, defeating Bardhaman quite easily by five wickets at the final held yesterday in Bardhaman town. The much expected win once again proved the legacy of Durgapur which has been producing young cricketers for quite sometime now, thanks to the Durgapur Cricket Academy in Durgapur Steel Township.

In the semifinals, Durgapur defeated Asansol while Bardhaman defeated Katwa-Kalna to reach the finals. The final was held at Rani Ground in Bardhaman Town.

The final, however, couldn’t start on time because of foggy weather conditions and wet pitch. The match had to be reduced to 30 overs a side from the earlier planned 35 overs.

Durgapur won the toss and send Bardhaman to bat. Good bowling, well supported with tight fielding didn’t allowed Bardhaman batsmen to score fast and at will. Except for Ripon Ghosh, who scored 34 runs and Brajeswar Chattaraj who scored 24 runs at a brisk pace with two sixes, none of the Bardhaman batsmen were able to rip the Durgapur bowlers’ bowling. Bardhaman managed to score 133 in their scheduled 30 overs. Durgapur bowler Sonu Kumar Singh took 5 wickets by giving away only 31 runs and made a huge difference.

However, Durgapur innings also started on a shabby note with the fall of two quick wickets. Durgpur’s most notable batsman Manish Shaw was sent back early, courtesy, a spectacular catch by Suman Das of Bardhaman. However, great display of batting skill by Mritunjoy Ram made the task easy for Durgapur. Ram scored a quick fire 89 runs with the help of 10 sixes and 4 fours. Durgapur reached the target in just 20 overs with as many as five wickets in hand.

Durgapur captain Bishal Ghosh, later speaking to the media, after winning the championship trophy said, “Though we lost two early wickets but were never under any kind of pressure because of our strong batting lineup.” He praised his fielders who he said had saved at least 30 runs.

Team for the upcoming Cricket Tournament organized by CAB in Birbhum has also been selected from this championship.
