Fate of contractual workers of DSP

Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP) like all other Steel Plants of the country has a large number of contractual workers along with permanent workers. At present, nearly 4500 contractual workers are involved in daily production process of the plant and play a major role in maintaining the production rate.
Most of the contractual workers are members of United Contractor Workers Union (UCWU), a Left Trade Union controlled and affiliated under CITU. But the scenario changed after the recent assembly poll result, in which Left Front have been convincingly defeated by Trinamool Congress – Congress alliance. The fate of these contract workers are in serious doubt after Trinamool Congress (TMC) won both the assembly seats of Durgapur defeating the CPI (M) candidate by large margins. After such convincing results, the trade union wing of Trinamool Congress, INTTUC demanded that 80 % of the contract workers must be from their members and initiated pressure tactics. As a first move, they demanded that the DSP management must stop gate pass renewal of all this contract workers which will automatically prohibit entry of the existing contract workers inside plant premises. Gate pass renewal has been temporarily stopped by the DSP management.
Though the newly elected legislative assembly member of Durgapur Paschim (west), Mr. Apurba Mukherjee denied any such demand by his party and firmly stated that they are not in favour of any such ouster, still there is a strong sense of insecurity prevailing among the existing contractual workers. UCWU on the other hand have reacted strongly and made it clear that this kind of unlawful ouster will lead to mass agitation and may affect the law and order situation of the city. In this tight situation the production of DSP may see a downward trend. Without gate pass being renewed, contract workers will not be allowed to enter the plant premises and without contract workers maintaining steady production at its peak is a tough ask.
