Huge arms seized from coal mafia hideouts at Andal

On Sunday, night (13th Jan 2103) Andal Police acting upon a tip seized a huge cache of arms from the abandoned Eastern Coalfield Limited quarters of Parascole Madhusudanpur area of Andal near Durgapur. The place is known to be the hideout of gangsters and coal mafias involved in illegal coal trade. Seizure of arms and ammunition before the panchayat polls has created a stir and a sense of fear among the residents of the Andal coal belt.
Dreaded don Bijoy Singh and two of his associates – Arun Singh and Ajoy Singh – were also picked up during the raid. The trio was sent to police remand for 14 days. Asansol-Durgapur Police’s ADCP (east) Sunil Yadav said that 100 bullets, 86 rounds of ammunition, a sword, two country-made muskets, one double-barrel gun, one revolver, one 9-mm pistol and four country-made pipe guns were seized by police from three different hideouts of the trio. “We have started probing why they had kept such huge quantity of illegal arms,” he added.
Trinamool Congress leaders alleged that the coal mafias were back in the fray to create trouble in the ensuing polls for the Left Front. CPM workers rejected the allegations and claimed that they have been arrested in fabricated cases and illegal coal mining has flourished in Andal, Jamuria, Baraboni and Salanpur under Trinamool patronage only.
