Durgapur News Desk, 10 October 2017: Incessant rain since Monday afternoon created a flood-like situation in Durgapur and adjoining areas. Deep depression prevailing over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining areas since Saturday night is said to be responsible for this.
Both Durgapur and Asansol witnessed three digit rainfall; only the second time this season, along with heavy stormy wind.
Though Kolkata received rainfall since Sunday early morning, Durgapur remained cloudy without rainfall. Light showers started from Sunday afternoon only. Heavy downpour started from late evening hours on Sunday and continued without stop till noon hours today.
At present, the deep depression is moving in west-northwest direction towards Jharkhand. Hence, it is anticipated that the rain intensity is likely to reduce over Gangetic West Bengal including Kolkata. However, Bankura, Purulia, Burdman, and Birbhum are expected to receive moderate to heavy rain today as these cities are in proximity to the weather system.
Normal life has been hugely disrupted and many of the wards under Durgapur municipal corporation have got inundated. Many houses in Subhas Pally, adjacent to Benachity market got submerged.
The Tamla rivulet in Main Gate area, adjacent to Durgapur Steel Plant was seen overflowing and houses adjacent was seen under water.
There was no electricity in most parts of the town since last night and mobile connectivity was also disrupted. While BSNL managed to maintain some service at least, JIO service virtually collapsed in Durgapur and adjoining areas.
However, since afternoon, rain has stopped and situation has improved slightly.
The meteorological department has said that the deep depression has weakened into a depression and by tomorrow it will transform into a low-pressure area, which will result in decreased rain activity after 24 hours.
Durgapur SDO, Sankha Santra today visited few affected areas in Durgapur to have a ground stalk of the situation there.
