Durgapur News Desk, 04 December 2017: Durgapur police arrested Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Sanjib Dutta working with the Combat Force at the Durgapur police station for his alleged involvement in the death of her wife Kanika Dutta, who has been working as a lady constable at the Durgapur police station only. On Sunday, the ASI was produced at the Durgapur SDJM court, where he has been sent to 14 days of judicial custody.
Kanika Dutta succumbed to her burn injuries on 1 December 2017 at a private super specialty hospital of Durgapur, which she suffered during a self-immolation attempt on 20 November.
A day after Kanika Dutta died, her relatives lodged a complaint of mental torture with the Durgapur police against her husband Sanjib Dutta. The complaint also alleges that Sanjib Dutta instigated Kanika to take her life.
Kanika and Sanjib while working together at the Durgapur police station became known to each other and entered into a relationship. “They eventually got married and were doing fine until Sanjib got involved in a extra-marital affair”, said one of Kanika’s relative.
On 20 November, the infighting resulted in Kanika trying to burn herself by putting kerosene oil. Sanjib while making an attempt to put off the fire injured himself. Kanika was soon rushed to a private hospital in Durgapur, where she succumbed to her burn injury after 10 days.
The couple was residing at the S N Banerjee Road locality in A-Zone of the Durgapur Steel Township. Kanika originally hails from Parulia adjacent to Durgapur, while Sanjib is originally a resident of Sagardighi in Murshidabad.
Police sources say that investigations are on to find the truth.
