A shocking incident of an old man from Durgapur killing his wife and son before hanging himself sparked off sensation in the industrial town yesterday morning. The awful incident took place in the Dhandabag locality of Durgapur, barely 2 Km from Durgapur Steel Plant.
Preliminary investigation suggests that the old man Nepal Chakraborty (80), first killed his wife Gita (70), followed by his son Sukanta (44), who suffered from a neurological disorder. He then hanged himself.
Police have seized two cords and utensils from the house to help in forensic examinations. The bodies were sent for post-mortem to Asansol District Hospital.
ADCP (East), Sunil Yadav, said: “The son was suffering from severe mental depression due to a neurological disorder and the situation worsened after his wife and daughter left him three years ago.” He further added: “Marks of strangulation were detected on the wife’s and son’s necks.”
Nepal Chakraborty, a resident of Durgapur’s Dhandabag locality had retired from SAIL’s Durgapur Steel Plant in 1990 under the Voluntary Retirement Scheme. He had four sons. Two of them migrated to other cities, while two others, Sukanta and Susanta, stayed back with their parents.
Locals said the family had fallen on hard times. The youngest son, Susanta, used to give private tuitions. Sukanta, who was found dead yesterday, was duped by a private sales agency and developed a neurological disorder after losing his job in 2008.
Neighbours said, the situation turned worse when Sukanta’s wife Saswati, left him taking their baby with her.
Following this, Sukanta’s health deteriorated. Local councillor Sushil Chatterjee said: “The entire family was depressed due to Sukanta’s poor health.”
Susanta, the youngest son, was the first to see the bodies. He said, “My father was hanging from the ceiling and my mother and brother were lying on the floor.”
Neighbors are shocked and saddened at this appalling incident.
