Sheikh Saidul Haque, the CPI(M) candidate from Bardhaman-Durgapur Lok Sabha Constituency may be just one and half months away for his retirement from the position of English Lecturer at the coveted Raj College of Bardhamaan, but is still full of exuberance and intent of going that extra mile to turn things in his favour.
Born on 28 June 1954, Sk. Saidul Haque with his customary smile and distinctive white Panama cap is virtually leaving no stone unturned to get re-elected for a second stint at in the Lok sabha from Bardhaman-Durgapur seat. He was an elected member of the 15th Lok Sabha.
Mr. Haque did M.A. in English from the Burdwan Raj College under Burdwan University. He has also passed B.Ed. and DELT. He started his professional career as a teacher of a Higher Secondary school. Then he got selected for teaching in college. Presently he teaches in Burdwan Raj College, one of the leading colleges not only in the district but in the entire state.
Sk. Saidul Haque, who got the membership of CPI(M) in 1977 is now the member of Bardhaman district committee of CPI(M) as well. He served as the Chairman of Bardhaman District Primary Education Council of West Bengal for almost a decade. He also worked as vice-chairman of Galsi Panchayat Samiti under Bardhaman district for a decade.
Mr. Haque has been a leading face in the literacy movement and a leading organizer of Bardhaman District Committee of Bongio Sakharata Prasar Samiti, the well-known organization in literacy movement.
As a Member of Parliament he served as the member in the Standing Committee on Commerce, Consultative Committee on Minority Affairs and House Committee. Sk. Saidul Haque is also known for his cultural affinities. He frequently writes articles on the various important socio-cultural issues. He also writes poems and short stories He has authored a popular book in Bengali titled Moulabad Muslim Janamanas (Fundamentalism and Muslim Population).
Married to Jharna Haque on 30 December 1983, Mr. Haque has a son and a daughter.
With an attendance of 97% Sk. Saidul Haque ranks as number one among Left Front MP’s in the 15th Lok Sabha. Not only that, Mr. Haque participated in 96 debates ranging on different issues and asked as many as 258 questions.
Sk. Saidul Haque is highly confident of retaining his seat firstly because of the huge response he is getting during his campaign and secondly because there is still some question mark in the Trinamool camp over the acceptance of Dr. Sanghamita Chowdhury as the party’s candidate for the seat.
The CPI(M) camp is also buoyant over the fact that the Election Commission is doing its part to ensure a free and fair poll.
