In a very shocking and heart wrenching incident a six- year-old boy was thrashed to death by a mentally unbalanced youth in Netaji Nagar Colony of Durgapur. Erupting in rage, the locals started ransacking the house of the accused in Netaji Nagar Colony under ward 21 of the Durgapur Municipality Corporation. However, police intervened in the nick of time and saved the offender from the mob’s fury. They took him into custody.
Karan Shaw the victim, a student of Class I of local Hindi Bharti School in adjacent Benachity area was seen caught hold by Raja Ruidas (45) a mentally ill youth of the same locality. Before neighbours could free Karan from the clutch of Raja, the kid was hurled into the air by Karan. As a result of which Karan’s head got smashed as it hit hard against a concrete slab.
Karan was immediately rushed to hospital where he was declared “brought dead”.
The accused, however, did not leave the scene after committing the crime. He looked remorseful, said eye witnesses.
Raja Ruidas had lost psychological balance after his wife deserted him 15 years ago, the locals said. He remained a butt of ridicule among the locals who used to tease him off and on.
However Karan’s family refused to buy the argument saying Raja is seen doing all the household duties well enough. Bijoy Shaw, father of Karan who works as a mason raised the pertinent question as to why a mentally challenged person has been let free by his family. He has seven brothers in the family, but none felt it necessary either to take Raja to a rehabilitation centre or to a good psychiatrist.
On spotting the local TMC Councilor Chandan Saha, the neighbours expressed their anger.
Karan’s mother Maya Devi was repeatedly getting fainted after hearing the news of her son’s death. Maya Devi has another son and daughter.
ADCP (East), Mr Sunil Yadav said: “Prima-facie, it seems the mentally challenged youth committed the crime in an impulse of insanity,” adding that the accused has been taken into custody.
