A 14-year-old girl was allegedly molested and attempted to rape by two suspected Trinamool workers at Andal near Durgapur, yesterday. However, as the girl, managed to flee, the duo followed her and beat her mother and three other neighbours when they tried to rescue the girl. This broad daylight incident has taken everyone by surprise and raises the issue of how unsafe Bengal has now became for women.
One may recall, that about a month ago, the rape of a school girl at Raniganj by two Trinamool supporters led to widespread violence in which several police vehicles were torched by angry mob.
The two accused, Sambhu Bauri and Kanchan Singh initially started to irritate the class VIII girl with slang comments, when she was on her way home at Kajora Sarshodanga from her school at Kajora High School. The two youths then tried to drag her to a bush and rape her. But she freed herself and ran to her home.
But the incident did not end here. The duo followed the girl to her home. Hearing her child scream, the mother came out and resisted but he was hit on her head and she became senseless. Three neighbours, who tried to interfere, were also beaten up. But seeing, more neighbours are coming out of their home, the two youths fled away.
The police said the two were Trinamool activists. However, Trinamool denied that they belonged to the party. Local sources said that Kanchan is unemployed, while Sambhu works as a daily wage labourer. However, the girl’s father, who is a fish seller is known to be a well known Trinamool supporter in the locality.
Neighbours, led by the girl’s father, went to Andal police station and lodged a complaint of molestation and attempt to rape against the two youths, Bauri and Singh.
Local Trinamool leader Naren Chakraborty said the two youths had no links with the party. “They were never our workers. They belong to the CPM,” he said.
The CPM also distanced itself from the two and demanded that the culprits must immediately be arrested.
Additional deputy commissioner of police (east) Sunil Yadav said a search was on for the duo.
