Monsoon arrived at Durgapur. The industrial town received its first monsoon rain yesterday. Today also the sky was overcast right from the morning and rain came pouring in the afternoon hours. Though parts of the city of Durgapur received heavy rain but the rain was not so heavy throughout. The rain brought a huge sigh of relief for the people of Durgapur, who were reeling under the heat of the scorching sun during which mercury almost touched 42 degrees. In fact, the heat and humidity had turned unbearable over the past week.
On Wednesday, Durgapur woke up to a gloomy sky and a light drizzle. The met office confirmed the arrival of monsoon, much to the glee of Durgapurians.
Being situated on a plateau land, the city of Durgapur is somewhat undulating and hence water logging is not seen here. Moreover, a few hours after rain signs of raining are hardly visible. Roads getting water logged or drains overflowing is not a common phenomenon seen in the city of Durgapur. Apart from Steel Township, DPL Township, ABL Township, MAMC Township and City Centre, other areas of Durgapur does not have a proper covered drainage system, but efforts and steps taken by Durgapur Municipality Corporation (DMC) has prevented incidents of water logging common in big cities like Kolkata.
The meteorological department has predicted more rain in Durgapur and adjoining areas in coming days. Though monsoon rain came about a week after its scheduled arrival, but expectations and predictions are high that Durgapur will have more than normal monsoon rain this year.
