Durgapur News Desk, 30 June 2017: The newly appointed chief executive officer (CEO) of the Asansol Durgapur Development Authority (ADDA), Mr. Arun Kumar Prasad, has been entrusted with the additional responsibility of administrator of the Durgapur Municipal Corporation (DMC). He has assumed charge yesterday.
The five year tenure of the Trinamul Congress run Durgapur civic board, led by Mayor Apurba Mukherjee ended on 28 June 2017.
On assuming office, Mr. Prasad vows to deliver quality civic amenities and was confident of performing the dual responsibility without much difficulty.
As the election to the Durgapur civic body couldn’t be held on time, so the appointment of an administrator became essential. The state government has now proposed to the state election commission to hold elections of Durgapur Municipal Corporation (DMC) on 6 August 2017.
It is highly unlikely that the outgoing mayor and former MLA Apurba Mukherjee will be projected as the next mayor of DMC by the Trinamul Congress.
Mr. Amitava Das, ADM (Zila Parishad) of Coochbehar has already been appointed as the commissioner of DMC and he will assist the new administrator, Mr. Prasad in the day-to-day functioning of the civic body. The IAS officer will remain as the administrator of DMC until the new board gets elected and assume charges.
Meanwhile the residents of the industrial town of Durgapur are much skeptical about the availability of civic amenities under these two administrative officials; a job which was earlier managed by the 43 councilors of the town.
The outgoing Mayor of DMC, Mr. Apurba Mukherjee was given a farewell by his office staffs on 28 June, which happened to be the last day of the former civic body.
Both TMC and Left Front has started their election campaign. Though none of the political parties has declared their candidates for the 6 August poll, but wall writing, campaign through social media and even door-to-door campaign has already begun.
