One of the three accused in Durgapur’s Rajbandh gang rape case was arrested from his village in Purulia last night and sent to 10 days police remand by SDJM Durgapur. The other two accused of the Durgapur gang rape case are still absconding. However police sources said that the two has been identified and their cell phone are being tracked.
A 23 year old pregnant woman was allegedly gang raped by three youths at Durgapur’s Rajbandh on 21 February night in front of her husband. The couple from Para in Purulia left their home after family tiff and was in search of a job. The couple met three youths in Joychandi Pahar Railway Station in Purulia. They boarded Purulia-Burdwan passenger train.
The youths assured the couple a job and got off the passenger train at Rajbandh Station which is the next station of Durgapur Railway station while going towards Howrah. From the station they took an auto and started towards Durgapur. They left the auto after going certain distance and started moving on feet. Then the three youths assaulted, thrashed and chased away the husband and raped his 23-year-old pregnant wife near the Rajbandh canal.
Police rescued the woman from near a bush near Rajbandh Canal, a little distance from the Rajbandh station early Saturday morning and sent her to Durgapur sub-divisional hospital. The women had initially declined to undergo a medical test. But later was convinced about the need and urgency of it after persuasion. A medical test of the victim has been conducted yesterday. Her garments have also been seized.
The CPI-M, meanwhile, took up the issue and three CPM MLAs accompanied by the party’s Mahila Samiti members, staged a demonstration at the Kanksa Police Station to protest the rape. Tempers ran high in the districts when Trinamool Congress leaders intervened to secure the release of two auto rickshaw operators picked up by the police for interrogation from Gopalpur village.
Mr Gouranga Chatterjee, MLA, Pandaveswar, alleged: “The police have been reluctant to nab the accused despite the fact that Kanksa has witnessed consecutive rapes over the past few days.”
Police expedited investigation into the Durgapur gang rape case and according to SP S M H Meerza: “A list of Purulia-based highway robbers operating in the region was procured and the couple was shown the photographs. The woman could identify one of the gangsters.”
Kanksa PS officer in-charge Biswajit Mukherjee raided the home of Meghnad Dhibar at Mongalda village in Purulia.
His two aides, however, haven’t been arrested yet. The police said that they are hopeful of nabbing the two other aides of Mehgnad soon. “Their cell phones are being tracked,” said an investigating official.
The accused Meghnad Dhibar has been charged under sections 376D (gang rape), 323 (voluntary causing hurt) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Police sources revealed that the accused has confessed his crime.
Meanwhile the family of the victim has reached Durgapur.
