Prime Minister’s Trophy judges team visited Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP) yesterday (13 January) to adjudicate the award of the PM’s Trophy for the best integrated steel plant in the country during the financial year 2013-14.
Members of the panel of Judges for the PM’s Trophy comprises of eminent personalities from iron and steel industry, metallurgy and related academic fields as well as the industry. Dr B N Singh, K A P Singh, Dr T Mukherjee, Prof P K Sen, Dr C P Chandrasekhar, Prof S K Singh, Jugal Kishore Tandon, O P Bhutani, and S K Bhatnagar. Along with the team KP Prashant and OP Verma of Prime Minister Trophy secretariat were also present.
During the course of their Plant visit, the members of the panel for the PM’s Trophy had a detailed tour of Converter zone of Steel Melting Shop, Sinter Plant Store, Coke Oven, Wheel & Axle Plant and Raw Material Handling Plant of DSP.
The team also pursued three projects based on the corporate social responsibility. The visited the Dampara Village adjacent to Durgapur steel township, a school for the handicapped and a charitable dispensary.
The nine best steel plants in the country, which are in the fray for the PM’s Trophy, are Bhilai Steel Plant, Rourkela Steel, Durgapur Steel, IISCO, Burnpur and Bokaro Steel Plant (all belonging to SAIL), Tata Steel, Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited, Essar Steel, Ispat group of Steel and Jindal Steel.
The Government of India has enhanced the cash award from Rs. 1 crore to Rs. 2 crores for the best performing integrated steel plant with effect from the performance year of 2006‐07. Runners up PM’s Trophy in the name of Steel Minister’s (SM’s) Trophy with a cash award of Rs. 1 crore has been incorporated from the performance year 2006‐07 in the Prime Minister’s Trophy Scheme.
11 main parameters for evaluating the performance of the integrated steel plants for the PM’s Trophy are: (1) Growth in Crude Steel production, (2) Efficiency of operations, (3) Financial performance, (4) Efforts towards Value Addition/Product Development, (5) Environment management, (6) safety, (7) Thrust on Research & Development (R&D), (8) Enabling parameters by an Independent Agency, (9) Customer satisfaction survey by an Independent Agency, (10) Employees’ Satisfaction Index by an independent Agency, (11) Observation of the Panel of Judges based on plant visits.
Former Indian Prime Minister, Shri P.V. Narasimha Rao, while dedicating Vizag Steel Plant to the nation on 1.8.1992, formally announced to present an award known as Prime Minister’s Trophy and a cash award of Rs. 1 crore each year to the best performing integrated steel Plant(s) to generate a sense of competition and for improvement of performance of the integrated steel plants.
Bhilai Steel Plant under Steel Authority Limited has won the prestigious PM’s Trophy a record 11 times. Durgapur Steel Plant is yet to bag this award for even a single time. In this year too chances of DSP is not much as the number of deaths in plant premises due to accident may harm its prospect.
