Welcome placards with wrong spelling of the President’s name greeted the President Shri Pranab Mukherjee, as he arrives for 9th Convocation of National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Durgapur yesterday (November 23). The “gross mistake” left not only the organisers but the entire city red-faced.
As the President’s convoy made its way to the NIT auditorium in Durgapur across Mahatma Gandhi Road, most of the welcome placards placed by the institution including that installed at the main entrance spelt his name as ‘Prabnab Mukherjee’ instead of Pranab Mukherjee, which left luminaries in political and academic circles embarrassed and fuming.
Mr Apurba Mukherjee, Mayor, Durgapur Municipal Corporation commenting on such a mistake at Durgapur NIT convocation said: “This central funded varsity, instead of bringing glory to the city has shamed us with their callousness. We need to get to the bottom of this goof-up.” Mr Mukherjee skipped the programme alleging high-handedness by NIT bigwigs.
There was a huge discontentment among the students, guardians and all the dignitaries for such a gross mistake in a programme like NIT convocation. Virtually this mistake became the talking point of convocation ceremony.
Later on in the day, as the news spreads in the city, everyone in Durgapur felt extremely disappointed and ashamed. How can a premier educational institute of the stature of NIT didn’t noticed wrong spelling in the name of the “first citizen of India” remained a mystery?
