Durgapur News Desk, 28 January 2017: Durgapur once again witnesses blood bath due to road accident yesterday. In a major road accident yesterday evening, near HUDCO More of Bidhannagar locality in Durgapur, one person died while 16 others were injured. Conditions of at least six of the injured persons are reported to be critical.
A bus carrying staffs of the Durgapur-based I Q City Medical College and Hospital while moving towards Pump House crossing from the HUDCO More of Bidhannagar, lost control and hit a Auto Rickshaw first and then before hitting the boundary wall of a hotel beside the road, hit several other pedestrians. As many as 17 persons, including the passengers of auto-rickshaw, bus and pedestrians were injured.
One of the injured was declared ‘brought dead’ after being taken to the Durgapur Sub Divisional Hospital, just a kilometre away. Three persons were released after giving first aid.
One might remember that in last ten days road accidents claimed several lives in Durgapur. An elderly person was killed in a road accident in MAMC Township on 17 January. The very next day a 28 year old youth was killed at the City Centre bus stand of Durgapur when a speeding private bus lost control and hit a motorcyclist. Then in the wee hours on 22 January, five Durgapur residents died and at least 40 others were grievously injured, when a hired a bus for a tour to Hazarduari and Tarapith, went out of control at a sharp turn and fell into a roadside ditch at Uttarkona Village More under Illambazar Police Station.
Recurrence of road-accident one after another and taking away precious lives is a cause of concern not only for the administration but is also putting question marks on the knowledge of the drivers about traffic rules. In most of the cases, drivers violating traffic rules and loosing control seems to be the common cause. Enforcement of stringent traffic rules and educating all concerned is perhaps the need of the hour.
