Vehicular movement on Durgapur’s Shaympur-Nadiha road was disrupted for over an hour yesterday (January 04) because of protest by small car drivers. The drivers and owners of small cars resorted to road blockade protesting the civic authorities’ recent decision of collecting toll tax on that road. Local citizens also joined the protest.
According to sources, it all started when the driver of a small car of that locality denied paying such huge toll tax. The driver argued that as he has to ply on that road several times in a day, it’s not possible for him to pay the amount of Rs 60 each time. He demanded that for he must be charged less as he being a local has to use the road several times in a day.
The staffs of the toll plaza were not all inclined to hear the logic and quickly it turned into an ugly spat of words. Soon other car owners and locals joined the protest and demanded that those who use the road frequently must be charged less. The busy road was blocked and traffic movement came to stand still.
Police was informed and they arrived soon. Police held discussion with both, – the protesters and the toll plaza authority. The road blockade was lifted after police assured of finding out a legitimate solution.
