Durgapur News Desk, 16 February 2018: Sensation gripped the industrial town of Durgapur yesterday, soon after an unclaimed trolley-bag found near a store room of a multi-storied apartment at Benachity was found to contain the naked decomposed body of a girl.
Manisha, a resident of the Rupali Apartment in Benachity called the police and informed them of a foul smell coming from an unclaimed trolley bag kept in a store room opposite of their apartment.
Police arrived in half an hour and detained Manisha, who is an asistant manager of the Fuljhore branch of SBI in Durgapur and her husband Rajiv Kumar, who is the manager of SBI’s Mejhia branch, just 35 km from Durgapur.
During initial interrogation only, Rajiv confessed that the decomposing, chopped-up remains of the 28-year-old woman was that of Shilpa Agarwal — a temporary staffer at the branch he manages in Bankura’s Mejhia.
During interrogation, Rajiv Kumar and his wife tried their best to put up a brave face and convince the police that Shilpa had killed herself, after which Rajiv panicked and stuffed the body in the bag.
However, after continuous interrogation for hours, Rajiv finally confessed today, that he killed Shilpa on 10th February night in their rented apartment in Durgapur’s Benachity locality, when her wife Manisha was not there.
Shilpa Agarwal, an operator of SBI’s Customer Service Point (CSP) kiosk at Mejia for over two years was in an illicit relationship with Rajiv Kumar, the branch manager of the same bank.
On February 9 (Friday), Shilpa left her Mejhia home saying she will visit relatives in Asansol. She did go to Asansol but left her relative’s home at 5.30pm same day. Next day, she called home and said she is in Asansol and would return a few days later. From Sunday onwards her family members couldn’t contact her because her mobile phone was switched off. Being unable to trace Shilpa, her family members approached the police. and lodged a missing complaint at Mejhia PS on Tuesday (13 February).
Interrogation revealed that Rajiv had an affair with Shilpa and since past few months, she had been pressurizing Rajiv for marriage. Shilpa used to visit Rajiv-Manisha’s rented apartment in Benachity in the absence of Manisha. Rajiv-Manisha’s only son stays with Manisha’s parent in Ranchi, where Manisha use to visit almost every weekend.
Last week also Manisha left for Ranchi on Friday and returned Monday. He smelt stench and Rajiv confessed his crime. The couple then drew up a plan to dispatch the body. A trolley bag was bought and the body was chopped to fit it inside the bag. But presence of CCTV camera in the apartment didn’t allowed them to dump the trolley bag containing the dead body elsewhere. They then positioned the trolley bag in the store room just opposite to their apartment.
Rajiv and Manisha was produced before the SDJM court Durgapur, where the judge have sent the couple to 10 days of police custody.
Meanwhile, the family members of the victim rushed from Mejia and gheraoed the Durgapur police station and demanded punishment for the guilty.
This gruesome incident reminds every resident of Durgapur about Samaresh Sarkar, another branch manager of Central Bank of India of Mamra Bazar branch in Durgapur who in 2015 had allegedly killed one Sucheta Chakraborty and her little daughter, stacked them in a travelling bag and tried to dump in the Hooghly river. He was caught red-handed.
