Textbook content at a Durgapur school created sensation

A textbook on General Knowledge at Surenchandra Model School of Durgapur has created sensation and disbelief in the industrial town. Three state ministers are scheduled to arrive today to attend a function at this state approved Bengali medium school located in the very heart of the Durgapur Steel Township.

On page number 77 of the book titled ‘Gyan Bichitra’ meant for classes V, VI and VII to help in empowering general knowledge of the students, it is written: “President of India – Mrs Pratibha Patil, Governor of West Bengal – Gopal Krishna Gandhi and Chief Minister of West Bengal – Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee”. Not only is that, the names of ministers of Left Front regime is accommodated as the state cabinet ministers.

The book incidentally was printed after the change in guard at Writers’ and this is the textbook’s 2013 edition, printed in October 2012.

The matter came into focus after Mr Ranjit Jana – a fruit vendor in a local market in City Centre and father of Sumanta, a class VI student of Surenchandra Model School, lodged a complaint with the SDM of Durgapur yesterday.
Mr Jana alleged: “When I took the matter to the school authority, they paid no serious attention to this.”

The SDM, Durgapur, Mrs Kasturi Sengupta, has taken cognizance of the matter after the guardians of students registered complaints against the school and the textbook publisher officially. Mrs Sengupta said: “This is a gross defect and we would seek explanation from the school authority.”

Mr Sushil Bhattacharjee , the Presidential award-winning teacher and a very respected man of Durgapur, who is also the president of the managing committee of the school, told reporters: “I had no idea that the teachers had approved such a faulty book.”

Mr Susanta Poddar, director of the school said: “Earlier we had detected the problem and had asked the publisher to rectify it when the Guardians’ Forum had come to us.”
