Durgapur News Desk, 07 February 2017: The minister of sports and youth affairs, Mr. Aroop Biswas, who is also the observer of of Burdwan district for Trinamool Congress, visited a number of wards under Durgapur Municipal Corporation and faced protest from his own party supporters. He also interacted with the local people there and gave an ear to the complaint of the locals about local councilors and leaders of the party.
The party observer came to Durgapur to a ground stock of the problems of the party in Durgapur before the Durgapur Municipal Corporation poll, scheduled to be held in May this year.
The state minister, who is said to be very close to TMC supremo Miss Mamata Banerjee, has visited as many as 17 wards of Durgapur Municipal Corporation. He met the ward presidents and local councilors there. He even collected detailed information on garbage cleaning and the status of the MGNREG schemes.
In the Assembly election held in 2016, Trinamool Congress had lost both the seats. While sitting Mayor of Durgapur, Mr. Apurba Mukherjee lost the Durgapur (East) seat by a large margin, CM’s blue eyed boy and agricultural advisor Mr. Pradip Majumdar lost from the Durgapur (West) seat.
Mr. Biswas is said to have issued warnings against corrupt party leaders of Durgapur and threatened to take strong action against them, after taking stock of the people’s grievances against several party leaders. Local have openly alleged that a section of the leaders are engaged in syndicate business and land dealings. TMC sources revealed that Biswas even gave hints that as many as 13 sitting DMC councilor won’t be given party ticket in the upcoming civil body election.
Meanwhile MLA of Asansol (South) Assembly segment and the chairman of Asansol Durgapur Development Authority (ADDA), Mr. Tapas Banerjee, have been appointed as the campaign head of the party for the upcoming civic elections.
The supporters are said to be annoyed with the party’s decision to give veteran MLA Mr. Tapas Banerjee charge of the poll committee instead of Durgapur District President Mr. Uttam Mukherjee and former MLA cum sitting Durgapur mayor, Mr. Apurba Mukherjee.
On Sunday, Mr. Biswas met the party activists at the Sindhu Kanu Indoor Stadium of Durgapur. In the evening he met the councilors. However existing mayor Mr. Apurba Mukherjee wasn’t present in the meeting. When asked, Biswas said that Mr. Mukherjee couldn’t attend the crucial meeting due to ill health, about which Mukherjee gave prior intimation.
