Durgapur News Desk, 25 April 2017: The ill-famous DVC More on NH-2 in Durgapur once again witnessed a heart wrenching accident yesterday at around 8 am. The officer in charge of Asansol traffic guard who was riding pillion on his son’s bike to catch bus from DVC More to attend his workplace in Asansol was crushed to death by a speeding truck on National Highway 2 in Durgapur this morning.
Sashibhushan Tiwari, 45, the officer of Asansol Durgapur Police Commissionerate was riding pillion to his 22-year-old son when he fell on NH-2. While Sashibhushan fell on NH-2, his son fell down on the other side and suffered minor injury.
“The police officer was riding pillion and his son was driving the bike. Both were wearing helmets and running at a moderate speed along the left flank of the highway,” a police source said.
How the motorbike lost control and how the father son duo fell down is still not clear. While some witnesses said the driver of the truck probably lost control of the vehicle and knocked the two-wheeler from behind, some also opined, that the motorbike lost control while attempting a sudden brake. The police officer fell to the right and was crushed under the truck’s front wheels while his son was flung to the other side and escaped unhurt.
“I was driving the bike on the left side of the highway at reasonable speed. Suddenly, I felt a jolt and fell off the bike. I turned back and saw a truck crushing my father’s head. I cannot recall anything after that,” he sobbed at Durgapur sub-divisional hospital, where his father’s body was taken for post-mortem.
The truck fled the scene before the police or local residents could stop it. It is yet to be traced.
Tiwari was posted as the officer in charge of Asansol traffic for the past eight months and had come to visit his family in Durgapur last night.
NH-2 or the Durgapur Expressway has been witness to a series of accidents over the past one month. Around 20 people, including singer Kalikaprasad Bhattacharya, have died in accidents on the stretch.
