Twin murder at Laudoha near Durgapur on Monday (31st January 2013) morning has created a sense of terror and panic among the residents of the region. Murder accused Sheikh Lalu, 32, was shot dead at his Amdahi residence under Laudoha police station area. Though Lalu died on the spot, his associate Sheikh Mansur was injured and admitted to Durgapur sub divisional hospital. However he too succumbed latar. Sheikh Lalu is one of the key accused in the murder of Madhaigunj coal mafia, Sheikh Selim, 50, on October 25th 2012. Both Lalu and Mansur belonged to Selim’s rival group, led by Sheikh Amin.
According to reports, at around 10.30am on Monday, a gang of 10 armed miscreants reached Sheikh Lalu’s house riding motor cycles. They fired at him and Mansur from close range and fled from the spot. Local people then informed Laudoha Police. Sylvan Murugan, SCP (East) of Asansol Durgapur Police Commissionerate, rushed to the spot immediately after the incident. The CP, Asansol Durgapur Police, Mr. Ajay Nanda and SCP (East), Sylvan Murugan said, that Laudoha Police has already started investigations and so far nobody has been arrested. A police picket has been deployed in the area. Combing operations too have started, he added.
Meanwhile, Amdohi and Kailashpur villages have witnessed killing of eight local youths of either Trinamool Congress or the CPI (M) having links with the coal mafia since 2008. Though Laudoha Police had an initial feeling that Mondays murder is a revenge killing, but the whole perspective got a twist last night after the family members of Sheikh Lalu lodged an FIR against Mr. Sujit Mukherjee, the block president of the Trinamool Congress, and his seven aides bringing charges of murder.
Mr. Mukherjee said: “This is absolutely baseless and I was surprised to learn this when one police officer told me about it. I also brought the matter to the notice of the party higher-ups”. He also claimed that he have been threatened with dire consequences from an unknown caller. Mr. Mukul Roy, the party’s general secretary, said at a meeting in Burdwan: “The Laudoha murders were the fall-out of inter-gang rivalry of the coal mafia and there was no reason to give it a political colour.” The local MLA and CPI-M’s district committee member, Mr. Gouranga Chatterjee, said: “There was no political motive behind the killings.”
The CP, Asansol Durgapur Police, Mr. Ajay Nand, said: “Police have started work and are taking a serious look into the respective FIRs lodged after the murders.”
