Two incidents of rape were reported from the Durgapur coalfield area over the last 48 hours. The shocking incidents has once again put into question, all claims of women’s safety in the state.
In the first incident a 14 year-old girl was raped by five local youths in Paraksole village under the jurisdiction of Andal police station near Durgapur. The youths allegedly dragged the girl inside a bush and tied her mouth with a piece of cloth before raping her one-by-one.
The girl was later rescued by her family members and was rushed to the Durgapur sub-divisional hospital for treatment. The injured girl have named five local youths to the police.
The accused five are, Ramu Nandi, Ajay Chowdhury, Manoj Gupta, Birbal Rajbhar and Bijoy Bauri – all aged between 25 to 30 years. Police have initiated a case against the accused, but they are absconding.
In another incident in Madhaipur village under the jurisdiction of Laudoha police station near Durgapur, one
security guard was caught by locals after he forcibly entered the house of a coal miner and taking advantage of his absence raped his wife at gunpoint.
The incident happened at around 11 p.m. on 27th April. The accused, however, managed to flee when the locals were taking him to the police station.
Both the incidents have raised serious concern and question on the matter of women’s safety in the industrial town of Durgapur. It is now evident, that the Delhi rape incident which shook the nation and Durgapur as well has not made the city or the country a better and safer place for women.
