Durgapur youth drowns while taking holy dip at Jaydev

Durgapur News Service, 16 January 2015: A Durgapur youth got drowned yesterday early morning while taking a holy dip of “Makar Sankranti” in the Ajay River at Jaydev in Birbhum district.

Rahul Kar, the 17 year old Durgapur youth got trapped in river bed while taking the holy dip, the police said.

Jaydev Kenduli, believed to be the birthplace of famous Bengali poet Jaydev on the bank of Ajay River is the place where lakhs of pilgrims takes holy dip every year on the occasion of Makar Sankranti. A three-day fair named, Jaydev Kenduli Baul Mela staring on the last day of the Bengali calendar month Poush and continues up to 2nd Magh is held on this occasion.

The Jaydev Kenduli Mela provides a unique opportunity to catch a glimpse of the wandering minstrels called Bauls, who believe in the simplicity of love of life and who propagate universal love that transcends religion.
