Murshidabad – weekend gateway near Durgapur

Murshidabad is just 190 Km from City Centre, the heart of the Steel City of Duragpur. Weekend spent at this historic city will be a rich and rewarding experience. Murshidabad is just 4 hrs drive from Durgapur and as the road condition is fair enough it will hardly be tiring.  Spend a day or two at Murshidabad, the land of Nawabs and take a plunge into the history of Bengal which marked the beginning of British rule in India.

From City Centre of Durgapur take the NH 2 and proceed towards Kolkata. Leave the NH 2 at Darjeeling More and take left turn to pick NH 34. After reaching Ilam Bazar take left turn and reach Kandi via Mohammad Bazar. from Kandi proceed to Baharampur from where Murshidabad is just 10 Km.

Murshidabad is situated on the bank of River Bhagirathi, a distributary of River Ganges. Murshid-Quili-Khan, the first Nawab of Bengal made Murshidabad his capital. Nawab Siraj -ud-daulaha, the last Nawab of Bengal lies in peace in his grave at Murshidabad. Places that are a must visit in Murshidabad includes, Hazar Duari Palace, Jahan Kosha Canon, Katra Masjid, Imambara, House of Jagat Seth, Kath Golap, Moti Jheel, Khoshbagh and the grave of the family of Mir Jafar.

So plan your next weekend at Murshidabad. Leave Durgapur early on any Saturday morning and try to reach Murshidabad within 01 p.m. Book your hotel beforehand. Check into your hotel and after taking lunch within 2 p.m take a local guide in your car and see all the important historical places. You can also keep your vehicle in the hotel and hire a horse driven cart to visit all these places.

Next day take a boat ride on the Bhagirathi and visit Moti Jheel and Khosbagh. Leave your hotel after taking lunch and proceed back to Durgapur. You will really love the whole trip.
